Apr 02, 2014 Found this useful post elsewhere on the Internet and thought I'd share it with the Marlin lever gun here. By 44-40 Willy Marlin 101 Marlin.

I have been digging around lo0king for info on a couple of sweeties that were passed on to me. I come across you guys and sounds like I found some real gun guys. There is alot of confussing info. Anyway I have a model 39 #T10476 and Model 39 #27167 octagon barrel both have 20' barrels..22 cal. I was interested in finding a site for manufacture date and if they are common.

Both are in great shape and shoot great. I know now why they were among my loved ones favorites. Thank You and I hope I used the right Protocol. Driver S License Renewal Center Sm Megamall. A Fellow Patriot.

Skimbug; The Marlin Model 39 was made with a 24 inch barrel, not 20 inch barrels. The one with the 'T' serial number prefix indicates it was made in 1960, but Marlin did not make any rifles at that time with an octagon barrel.

The rifle with the 'T' serial number and a 20 inch barrel must be a Mountie. Does it have a straight grip stock and round barrel?

The other rifle could be a 1973 made gun, but the serial number really looks to short or should have a few more numbers. Marlin was making octagon barrel rifles in 1973, and this could be a Model 39A Octagon or a 39M Octagon. The 39M Octagon would have a 20 inch barrel. You might look at the side of the barrel and tell us what markings are there. Looking forward to your reply. Hi guys, Thanks for the reply and sorry for the way I wrote the info. I will try to attach some pics after work.

I went back to the rifles and this may clear it up. Marlin Century Limited--27167 no micro groove indication straight stock rear of lever is square Quick take down Brass butt plate, fore end cap, trigger and a plate on right reciever and stock This is the one with octagon barrel and I am measuring fro mussel to rear of camber and not to back of actio to get the 20' The other is -Marlin Golden 39-A Mountie --T10476 Basic looking gun withstraight stock micro groove rear of lever is round take down Also is 20' I better not be late to work so thanks again.

Skimbug; The 39-A Mountie with the 'T' serial number prefix is just that and made in 1960. The 39 Century Limited was first made in 1970 to commemorate Marlin's 100th Anniversary. It was made with the 20 inch octagon barrel. The serial number starting with 27xxx indicates that this gun was made in 1973, and after checking some notes, there were 10 Century Limited Model 39's shipped in 1973 in an effort to clean up the remaining stock of parts on hand.

Typical of Marlin to do so. I hope this helps.
